Cook Islands

Cook Island is a very well kept South Pacific secret. Actually - they are approximately 15 well kept secrets located over a couple of million square kilometres near Tonga and Samoa. This picturesque gathering of volcanic islands and atolls are geographically divided into two groups - northern and southern islands, but the warmth and innocent hospitality is a common denominator amongst the population in both groups. You see, many of the Cook Islands are more or less untouched by tourism.

With its rich Polynesian history and European influence, the culture of The Cook Islands is simply fascinating, and it was from the capital - Rarotonga - that migration of Maoris to New Zealand is said to have begun. More recently, the Cook Islands has been the proud host of the latest instalment of the adventurous Survivor series.

In terms of travel, flights to and from the Cook Islands, are available from Air New Zealand, Air Rarotonga and Pacific Blue. Car and motor scooter hire is available but you will need to do a Cook Island driving test! After that, grab a map and your Lonely Planet travel guide and start exploring - but make sure you include the breathtaking island 'aquarium' that is Aitutaki. This place will definitely capture your heart.

Because the Cook Island weather is almost always nothing short of spectacular, a beach bungalow might just add bit more charm to your escape.
